Do you or your family make any special dishes for the holidays?
On Christmas Day, we had traditional Christmas roasted meals: turkey, ham, potatoes, veggies… and the Christmas drink eggnog. It was, however, all in the past…
There are three main Chinese Festivals, and families celebrate these festivals with specific foods to symbolise the occasions:
- “guo nian” (lunar new year) — big feast according to local customs, including inter alia, new year cakes and rice dumplings, both savoury and sweet
- “duan wu” (dragon boat festival) — rice dumplings both savoury and sweet
- “zhong qiu” (mid-autumn festival) — moon cakes both savoury and sweet
The sense of ‘guo jie’ (celebrating festivals) is, however, fading away…
Does it really matter what we eat on holidays?
I say, it does not matter what we eat on holidays or guo jie, it only matters that families can get together to share love and show their care and support to each other.
For Christian, there is one best meal — the Lord’s Supper, that is usually held on the Lord’s Day (Sunday – usually a holiday to workers). We are the family of Lord Christ Jesus and assemble on the Lord’s Day in remembrance of His love on the cross for earthly people.
Family is the symbol of love and home meals shared by family members are the best meal ever to demonstrate “family is love”.

“Human Warmth” ~ ✨
When people are present, warmth remains
When they depart, the affection wanes
Some say the local human touch is now out of date
I say it’s all about whether you’re willing to cultivate
In cities, families dining together daily is rare
But not impossible —
Only if we want it or not
Those who only dwell in regret
Can’t bring back the past’s sunset.
To carry on tradition
It’s everyone’s effort
To face the challenges
Our heart does the job
A home filled with warmth isn’t a luxury —
It’s a matter of whether we want it or not
We never know what we had until it’s gone
Enjoying the selfish self today may lead to tomorrow’s dawn of solitude
Once the warmth has withdrawn

只懂遺憾的 換不回昔日的情懷
傳統的延續 是人人不怕難去延續
想家有情味 不是奢想 是各人想不想
人不失去 不知道自己曾經擁有
享受今天的自我 會成為明天的孤獨
