“Wicked Women” ~ ✨
The Bible mentions many wicked or promiscuous women, but among them, I have found five to be the most vicious. Of these five, two appeared during the period of the Kings. Their respective rankings are as follows:
1. Jezebel: She ranks first among the most vicious women. Revelation 2:20 rebukes the immorality of Jezebel, which continues from generation to generation.
2. Athaliah: Her ranking is just below her mother, Jezebel. She usurped the throne and was so cruel she killed her own relatives. 2 Kings chapters 11 & 12 record her brutal and vicious acts, but the scripture does not mention her reason for usurping the throne. My conjecture is that it was partly for self-preservation and personal gain, and partly to further her ambition to have all Judah worship Baal.
3. Potiphar’s Wife: The wife of Pharaoh’s captain of the guard. She attempted to seduce Joseph, and when she failed, she falsely accused him, leading to his imprisonment for two years (Genesis 39:7-20).
4. Delilah, Samson’s Woman: She was treacherous, deceitful, and greedy—possessing all these traits. She schemed to have Samson’s hair shaved off, leading to his capture by the Philistine enemies, who gouged out his eyes and caused him to lose his strength (Judges 16:17-21).
5. Herodias, Wife of Herod the Jewish King: She used her daughter to ask Herod for the head of John the Baptist as a gift. Thus, John the Baptist was killed. “The heart of a woman is most poisonous,” as they say, because she harbored hatred for John the Baptist for reprimanding Herod for marrying her (Matthew 14:3-11).
King Solomon, the Preacher, who had 1,000 concubines (700 wives and 300 concubines) during his 40-year reign, sighed (reflected with emotion) after this life of indulgence: “Look, this is what I have found,” says the Preacher, “Adding one thing to the other to find out the reason, Which my soul still seeks but I cannot find: One man among a thousand I have found, But a woman among all these I have not found. Truly, this only I have found: That God made man upright, But they have sought out many schemes.” (Ecclesiastes 7:27-29).
God made mankind upright, but sadly, everything changed starting from the time when Eve and Adam ate the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil! Sin has been passed down through generations. By Noah’s time, human wickedness on the earth was great, and every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time (Genesis 6:5). After the flood, in the post-Noah era, over four thousand years to the present day, human pride, jealousy, and greed have again entangled them in sin. The power of sin is truly great; those living on earth cannot lift their heads under its dominion. God recorded this history as a warning for future generations. The events recorded in the Bible are history, yet disappointingly, history repeats itself. Men are ruthless, women are vicious—this has been seen in all nations, past and present.
These wicked women in the Bible were not born evil. They did not know God or did not submit to God; thus, their innate sinful nature combined with the temptations of the world made them wicked. The five wicked women mentioned above all started with an immoral heart. One must guard their heart above all else, for everything you do flows from it (Proverbs 4:23). A good heart bears good fruit; a bad heart bears bad fruit—this is an unchanging law (Matthew 7:17). The human spirit is the lamp of the LORD that sheds light on one’s inmost being (Proverbs 20:27). If the lamp is not lit, the conscience is covered, leading to perverse deeds and vicious wickedness.
If the heart is guarded, the limbs will be clean and the tongue free from deceit; but how easy is that to achieve! People love the dazzling world and pursue things that are pleasing to their eyes. Just like the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil was pleasing to the eye and desirable, Eve ate it, and Adam ate too. From then on, the eyes of their lust were opened. Sin became the king of the world; men and women, practicing all kinds of evil, reflect each other under sin’s dominion.
If we want our eyes to be clear, we must keep God’s lamp always lit, illuminating our hearts and minds. Bright spiritual eyes will guide the soul and body, in cooperation with the Holy Spirit, to overcome evil with good. Eve ate the fruit from that tree to gain wisdom, but she did not know that not eating would have been wisdom. The heart of the wise instructs his mouth and adds persuasiveness to his lips (Proverbs 16:23). What enters the mouth and what comes out of it are matters of knowledge and wisdom. The common saying, “A woman’s heart is as deep as an ocean needle,” is not used to praise a woman’s intelligence. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom (Psalm 111:10). God knows all that a woman schemes in her heart. Sadly, many women choose their own ways, while few follows God’s guidance.
Since the sinning of Adam and Eve, God declared enmity between man and woman; between the offspring of man and the offspring of woman. He also said that a woman’s desire will be for her husband, and he will rule over her (Genesis 3:15-16). Starting from this curse, women naturally love beauty to satisfy the man they desire. The five venomous women mentioned in this article harmed others for power, fame, hatred, or wealth. Even today, most women still crave “external beauty” to satisfy their lustful pursuits. Achieving physical beauty requires combating glycation, free radicals, and inflammation; these must start from within. To start from within, one must first pursue “inner beauty.” Women who seek God and obey His commands will gain wisdom, making them beautiful both inside and out.
Women, seek to acquire wisdom rather than beauty; choose honour over gold. Do not be an enchantress in youth, nor a white-haired sorceress in old age. Instead, let gray hair be a crown of glory. Those who do this, on the path of holiness and righteousness, will surely receive the crown of eternal glory!
