If you could permanently ban a word from general usage, which one would it be? Why?
Using phrases like “My God!” or “Oh Jesus!” as expressions of surprise, dismay, or anger is most disrespectful to God Almighty.
The holy name of God is for prayer, praise and worship, not for casual exclamations. Using God’s name to react to trivial events is seen as equating God’s name with common profanity, which is viewed as a deep offence.
While some use these phrases with malicious intent, many use them out of habit or in moments of weakness, which may lessen the guilt, but the act itself remains objectively disrespectful. To take it seriously, it could be regarded as a form of blasphemy, for it fails to show proper reverence for God’s name in speech.
These kinds of expressions must be banned because they treat a sacred name as a common, trivial, or vulgar interjection.
