Daily Prompt

Describe a positive thing a family member has done for you.

Family symbolises love and care, just as AI symbolises knowledge and intelligence.  Love includes understanding, trust, hope, forgiveness, and perseverance (1 Corinthians 13:4-8).  AI can fail you, but love never fails.  In family, we do all things for love.  Family values lie in the foundation of love, unity, and direction.

In Chinese tradition, family values are virtually all values in life.  A parent’s words are commands to their children; disobedience may result in financial penalties or even expulsion.  Rebellion is regarded as negative, even when rebelling against something that is right.  In the traditional family, the parent’s command rules—not the child’s fantasy.

In my culture, children are taught that obedience is love.  That makes some family ‘positive’ actions feel less contradictory.  While family love is great, the greatest love is to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.  Jesus says, “You are my friends if you do what I command.”  He died for sinners—for those who believe in Him and follow His commands (John 15:13-14).

My family is not perfect—no family is.  I love my family the way my parents loved us; likewise, my siblings love me more or less the way I love them.  Our family’s unspoken rule is that we never harm each other, and we show up when it matters.

Five months ago, I travelled abroad to attend my niece’s wedding.  During my stay, my brother and his wife looked after me completely—from picking me up at the airport to making sure I had everything I needed, even little comforts like my favourite breakfast each morning.  I felt truly loved and blessed.

That might sound simple, but in my family, love is shown through action, not just words.  My brother did not have to do all that, but he did that solely because of love—caring for me as our parents cared for us. That trip reminded me of something I believe deeply: love never fails (1 Corinthians 13:8). AI can give me information, but only my brother’s steady kindness gives me peace.

My family values are rooted in Confucian values—cultivate oneself, regulate the family, govern the state, and bring peace to the world.  Obviously, family is the foundation for cultivating individual members, and virtuous individuals make the family united in love and grace.  People drawn from such families to form the government can contribute to a trustworthy, prosperous, and dependable state.  In the government, officials are seen as discharging the duties and responsibilities of parents.

Doing positive things for family or others can be misperceived as negative by the receiver.  Ultimately, who decides what is positive?  Hopefully, the following poem and scripture may shed some light on your thoughts.

1 Corinthians 2:14:

“The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.”
