Daily Prompt

List the people you admire and look to for advice…

Everyone is born looking to someone for advice.  At different stages of life, we turn to different people.  For instance, an infant or child looks to parents for guidance; a student seeks advice from teachers; an adult turns to supervisors or professional peers.  While adults need advice from others, they also give advice to others.

The earliest advice I received came from my parents.  I am not exactly like them, but they deeply influenced my journey into adulthood.  My dad had a strong character but a soft heart, while my mom was gentle in appearance but strong in spirit.  In my youth, I was more like my dad, but as I matured, I became more like my mom.  During my career, I looked to my bosses and other professionals for advice, and in turn, I gave advice according to my duties and responsibilities.  Whether as a child or as an adult, I seek advice and guidance from God, and I continue to be built up in Christ by Him.

Though everyone is born looking to someone for advice, not everyone admits they need it.  A patient I visited last week was one such person.  She had fallen and fractured her hip. She was adamant that she needed no advice or help from anyone—she insisted she was the one and only advisor and helper in her life.  I praised her strength and confidence, but I couldn’t help gently guiding her to give thanks to those who actually advised and helped her through this accident.  Without the surgery and medical care provided by a public hospital, she could not have recovered, and her excruciating pain could not have been relieved.

All things work together for good (Romans 8:28), yet not everyone realises or accepts this truth.  In this world, no one lives in isolation. Everybody needs somebody to advise, guide, and help them.  The more we appreciate this truth, the more we enjoy living in reality.
