What are your favorite brands and why?
A person’s name identifies them, and a brand’s name connects to that product. A famous brand is defined by material, handiwork, durability, and sales. Cost is also a factor for some buyers to consider.
In the old days, a brand became popular by word of mouth. Today, a brand or product can go viral online in a split second. More “likes” attract more attention, and more attention adds more fanatics chasing after the product—even though they know little about it. Fashion is no longer about style or design; most buyers are chasing “likes” rather than the brand itself. Many buyers don’t necessarily like the product—they just like to follow the crowd. When the winds stop blowing, the product may be forgotten.
I go for good brands too, but for different reasons: quality, design, and cost. For fashion, design precedes quality; for a smartphone, security outweighs cost. For instance, I choose iPhone (Apple) over other brands, even though it’s more costly. For everyday goods, I normally go with a traditional brand over new ones.
Since last year, I have been a buyer of products hand-made by families in Israel as my way of supporting small family businesses there. It’s not about the brand but faithfulness. I pay tribute to those families holding on to their small businesses for the love of their culture, heritage, and collective memory. Brands are indicative of the journey of their lives, the collective efforts of their families, and their unwavering commitment to passing on traditions generation after generation.
How can I not support such beautiful stories to carry on?
