Prayer

Great God,

When we look upon the heavens and see the earth, we behold Your throne and Your footstool.  By Your understanding You set the heavens in place, and by Your wisdom You founded the earth; both heavens and earth submit to You.  All things were made by the word of Your mouth, and they speak forth that word, standing before You, the Creator, in reverent awe.  Mankind, the work of Your hands, does not listen to Your word.  Those who think themselves wise are truly foolish; those who think themselves clever are truly ignorant.  The heavens roar, the earth quakes, floods rage, locusts devour the land—yet still, people do not know their place before heaven and earth, denying Your kingdom, Your authority, and Your glory.

You spoke to Moses and made a covenant with Your chosen people to protect them.  You gave Your only beloved Son, Jesus Christ, and made a covenant with all humanity, revealing Your love for every tribe and tongue.  The words from Your mouth have been recorded, so that generation after generation may know that You are God—the Almighty who created the universe.  You have promised this: that all who fear You will gain wisdom, and all who follow Your will will possess understanding.

O God, who truly understands the anguish of Your heart?  Who grieves over the things that grieve You?  Century after century, millennia have passed, yet God’s love for the world remains unchanged.  The heavens continue to roar, the earth keeps trembling, floods follow one after another—all these are signs of God’s patient, grieving heart, waiting for sinners to repent.

May those who have already received salvation bear witness to their salvation here on earth, standing with the morning light, keeping company with the shining stars, and together, throughout the vast universe, praise the greatness and glory of God’s creation!

We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen!
