What notable things happened today?
From early this morning, under a severe rainstorm warning, the sky was covered with dark clouds and heavy rain poured down.
Usually, when a rainstorm signal is issued, people are advised to stay indoors to avoid accidents. That means things slow down — for some, extra sleep, or longer stretches of video games on their phones.
Today, I had volunteer work to do: visiting patients in the hospital. But if the rainstorm signal intensified, the chaplaincy service would be cancelled. So I waited, fully ready for the call. An hour later, the sky began to clear, and the rain softened. I grabbed my umbrella and headed out for the scheduled visit.
I cherish every opportunity to serve others in need, because serving them is a gift and a joy in the Holy Spirit. The patient I visited today is a veteran Christian I had never met before. At first, she came across as proud — hungering to win for herself. But as we talked more deeply, she became humble, awakened from her self-centered glory to the glory of God. It was remarkable: the Holy Spirit worked to turn her from selfish desires towards humble seeking after God, and a desire for closer communion with the triune God.
As I write this prompt, I gaze at the dark sky and the heavy rain — the second storm of the day. But this time, I am “off duty” at home, meditating and blogging, reminding others of the need to notice the notable, to give thanks for the thank-worthy. Heaven is God’s throne, and the earth His footstool (Isaiah 66:1). Yet, do we truly know this?
